Motivational Interviewing to Create Health Behavior Change in Pediatric Patients and Families

Stephen Pont, MD, MPH, FAAP, of the University of Texas Southwestern in Austin, Texas, and Joani Jack, MD, FAAP, of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, explore the application of MI principles in pediatrics. They review the key principles of MI, simple steps that the busy clinician can make to move toward MI in practice, and application of MI techniques in breastfeeding and pediatric nutrition scenarios. They also discuss MI and pediatric obesity resources, including online toolkits from the highly successful Healthy Eating and Living Education (HEALED) program from the Tennessee American Academy of Pediatrics.
