Richard J. Schanler, MD, director, Neonatal Services, Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York and Northwell Health, and professor, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, will discuss the benefits of a mother's milk for the preterm infant and review possible mechanisms in regard to its ability to prevent the intestinal infection necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Dr. Schanler will also discuss newer strategies for human milk fortification and whether donor human milk can be used as a proxy for a mother's own milk.
