Pediatrician's Corner: A Conversation with a Pediatric Hematologist

This education is about:

  • Identifying patients at high-risk for iron deficiency in early childhood and adolescence
  • What pediatricians need to know about interpreting complete blood counts (CBCs)
  • Scenarios when CBC results indicate referral to a hematologist is needed
  • How to assess a patient when there is concern around abnormal bleeding

Why it matters:

Pediatricians possess the expertise to recognize an incredible range of illnesses, disease states, and developmental red flags. They’re also trained to make informed decisions about when specialized care is truly necessary. Knowing when a referral to a subspecialist is warranted is rooted in having a robust understanding of – and adherence to – clinical practice guidelines. Yet, these guidelines are underutilized by a large percentage of pediatricians. Empowering pediatricians to rely on established guidelines while also improving the interface of primary and specialty care in pediatrics is central to improving patient care outcomes.

Target Audience:

A national and international audience of primary care physicians (PCPs), pediatricians, and general practitioners (GPs), and other healthcare providers involved in childhood health.
