In this activity, Paul J. Rozance, MD, reviews the differences, benefits, and when to use the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Pediatric Endocrine Society (PES) guidelines for screening, evaluation, and management of hypoglycemia, while highlighting the importance of treating asymptomatic hypoglycemia. 

In the companion, Neonatal Hyperglycemia in the ELBW Infant, Dr. Rozance discusses strategies to prevent and treat hyperglycemia in extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) and preterm infants. He identifies risk factors, the long-term effects of hyperglycemia, and the rationale for treating and preventing this biochemical disorder.

  Paul Rozance, MD, is The Frederick C. Battaglia Endowed Chair in Neonatology at Children’s Hospital Colorado and professor of pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora. Dr. Rozance received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine.  He was awarded a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine by the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

  The goal of Dr. Rozance’s research is to obtain a better understanding of how the fetus translates nutrient signals from the placental into anabolic signals for growth, specifically insulin secretion. The research focuses on intrauterine growth restriction and the pancreatic beta-cell. The translational studies revolve around the broad area of perinatal insulin-nutrient metabolism and have led to Dr. Rozance’s clinical interest in glucose metabolism during the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. His research has been supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health.

  Dr. Rozance is the author or coauthor of articles and abstracts published in peer-reviewed journals and he was recognized as one of the best UpToDate authors for his research on neonatal hypoglycemia. Dr. Rozance serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Endocrinology and Journal of Molecular Endocrinology, and is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Physiological Society, Perinatal Research Society, and the Society for Pediatric Research.
