Benjamin D. Gold, MD, is an attending physician in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at the Children’s Center for Digestive Healthcare (CCDHD), co-director of GI Care for Kids, and founder and quality director of the Aerodigestive Center of Excellence at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Gold received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, and fellowships at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Prior to his appointment at CCDHC, Dr. Gold was chair of pediatric gastroenterology and director of the division of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Emory University.
Dr. Gold is a recognized leader in the epidemiology and pathobiology of acid-related diseases in children, in particular, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other esophageal disease.
At the Aerodigestive Center, Dr. Gold and his colleagues follow approximately 300 medically complex children and at GI Care for Kids, they follow almost 1,100 children with IBD. Dr. Gold has been actively involved in characterizing the gut microflora and its relationship to diet and the management of IBD, as well as GI allergy and eosinophilic esophagitis. His recent research is focused on the role of infectious agents and the microbiome involved in the pathogenesis of pediatric Crohn’s disease as well as the role of probiotics in disease prevention and health maintenance.
Dr. Gold is president of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition and has served the organization in a number of other capacities. He is a sought-after speaker, a reviewer for several prestigious medical journals, and has produced numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, manuals, videos, webinars, teaching aids and other educational material on pediatric GI disease.
